Question about working with Sloan Flushometer?
Because my company would rather not spend money on calling a plumber several times a year, I am the go to guy to deal with minor plumbing problems. I am able to take apart a Sloan flush valve and replace parts and put it all back together just fine.
I am having more of an issue with the toilet spud. I have approximately 20 of these units in my location, and it seems like I'm constantly having to repair leaks from the spuds. I'm guessing it's mainly caused by people using their feet to flush rather than their hands.
When installing/changing these spuds, how tight are they supposed to go? So far I've had trouble getting them tight enough to seal properly, but not so tight they just pop out of the hole. Are there any rules or guidelines that will help me here?
I did just find a spud wrench which should make it easier for me to work with these.
My experience with spuds is that once they've popped once, they're very prone to either leaking or popping again. I don't need to tell you that the tolerance between the china on the WC and the rubber on the spud is fairly small - just enough to get the spud in when it's loose and then tighten it. Perhaps the compression of the rubber over time makes the fit sloppy if it pops.
Anyway, what I've come to do - even on new installs, is to take the spud out, make sure the china is dry, make sure the rubber on the spud is dry, (use a hair dryer if needed), and then put some clear silicon on the rubber or china, where they meet.
Tighten down as per usual, assemble the flushometer and lock the stall for a couple of hours. Once the silicon has set, you're good to go........and as far as the foot flush thing goes - I agree with you there. You can, (it looks ugly as hell but.....), you can put a split ring hanger on the discharge tube and anchor it, with some threaded rod, to the wall. Place the hanger as high up the tube as possible. It gives rigidity to the assembly and stops the strain on the spud.
