He acts so crazy,and is always getting into something. He is also acting aggressive towards my 10 month old son and I want that to stop. My other dog is a pit bull and is well behaved and loves and plays with my son. I wish that for my little min pin too...HELP!!
as a long time former breeder of Miniature Pinschers, they are NOT high strung dogs...
This is a hunting ferreting breed who's instincts today are more intact than nearly any other small breed. They are extremely energetic and can be fiercely independent. Much of the attitude toward what novices or layman call aggressive aggression is in fact defensive. Miniature Pinschers if true to the breed do not take well to over handling. They are not recommended for children due to this. The misconception is they are a "toy" breed. They are not a Toy. Far too many purchase these dogs assuming that being it is little it is therefore suitable for children. In fact, quite the opposite. Small breed dogs should never be purchased with children in mind. The Miniature Pinscher is in fact a terrier, just like the American Rat Terrier, the Jack Russell (Parson John Russell) Terrier, Fox Terrier etc. These breeds have high energy levels that need to be met. Failing to do so results in a dog prone to mischief. The breed lives in a state of "terrible twos" well into their senior years. I would recommend monitoring the play and interaction between the child and the dog to see how the child handles the dog. Miniature Pinschers are not truly trainable but will take to learning commands. It is best with this breed to concentrate on a few not all issues. Also, a Miniature Pinscher that has worn off this energy is more prone to pay attention to the learning. They are treat oriented which greatly helps but in moderation. The breed can put on weight easily. In 47 years with this breed the key word is "patience". Forcing the dog will only create a defiant small dog. Keep in mind they are independent by nature as that is they way they were originally bred. They were created for controlling rats and general vermin on German farms much as we us feral cats on farms today. They lived primarily in barns and were not actually house pets. Therefore left to their own based on their breeding to do what they do best. A cross between the smooth coated Dachshund and the Italian Greyhound, they are not high strung. These are not Chihuahua's but terriers and can carry with them a natural attitude that was bred into them 300 years ago even to this day. Be patient and reward good and they do remember. The breed is actually very intelligent but unfortunately being that they are stubborn the novice has a tendency to confuse stubborness with the dog not being intelligent.. This is a mistake that causes a great deal of problems. Discipline can be done with a demanding stern tone in the voice. Miniature Pinschers react better to a person who has alpha status and controls the situation. Water spray bottles work generally well as a deterent to bad behavior with a stern NO. Keeping in mind though that this will be a matter of your patience out weighing the natural stubborn attitude of the dog. In time though with patience, you will prevail. I have 15 Miniature Pinschers. Several have come to me as adults ranging from 6 to 12 years. It took time to break bad habits but they have come around. But the key was always patience and continued working with the dog.
