Field Trips
New Field Trips in 2009
In 2009 we're expanding our outreach to the community with a series of field trips on various topics we hope will inform, inspire, and empower people to become more self-sufficient and energy efficient.
Our first field trip February 21st was a huge success. Sixty people showed up at Kit Carson Village to hear Pete Coates talk about "What Does LEED Certification Look Like?" and toured LEED certified homes. Then we moved on to Comstock Seed to Ed and Linda Kleiner's new solar PV system ribbon cutting and were treated to a wonderful Locavore Lunch consisting of food produced within a 100mile radius of the Carson Valley, provided by Dan Kaffer of Western Nevada ResourceConservation and Development.
May 2nd we rented a school bus and went to the prison farm in Carson City to visit Hungry Mother Organics' year-round vegetable growing operation, Full-Circle Compost's compost-making operation, watch inmates from the Wild Horse program trim feet, and heard about the Co-gen biomass plant that generates electricity from chipped waste wood. Thanks to Tim Bryant and Mark O'Farrell who gave up their Saturday morning to be our tour guides. It was nice to see how projects can come together in a symbiotic relationship to make a win-win situation for everyone - we need more of that!
On Sept. 11th, the evening before the Green Living Fair, we'll be hosting a Slow-Foods dinner at Barone and Reed's in Minden consisting of locally produced foods and a choice of 3 entrees - details to follow.
More trips will be planned in the future and added to this site as they are set up, so check back periodically. If you'd like to be notified of our events and activities via email, send your email address to vrbates@charter.net to be added to the list.
Green Living Fair
Exhibitors
Download Exhibitor Forms and Event Rules
At the Green Living Fair we'll have exhibitor booths showcasing energy efficient vehicles, renewable fuels, products and services related to green building, energy efficiency, alternative energy, sustainable living, landscaping/gardening, and locally produced products.
One of the suggestions we received from this year's fairgoer survey was to bring in even more exhibitors. Since we'd talked with several potential exhibitors who wanted to participate but couldn't staff a booth for 2 days, or couldn't afford the booth fees in this tight economy, in 2009 we're going to try having the fair on Saturday only. We've also reduced the price for an exhibitor booth.
If you'd like to be an exhibitor, please download the rules and exhibitor forms (links above) and mail them in, the earlier the better. You'll have more exposure by being added to this website, and we'll have a better idea of how many booths to plan for. For more information, email Katherine Winans at jkw@gbis.com.

Workshop Presentations
The Sustainable Living & Renewable Energy Roundup is accepting workshop proposals for the 2009 Green Living Festival scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Lampe Park. We are looking for information about new concepts and innovative technologies, strategic tools and green solutions for individuals and the community. Please fill out a Presentation Proposal (PDF File) and submit to Steve Lewis at lewiss@unce.unr.edu.
Steve has proposals from Ed Kleiner on "Comstock Seed - a Sustainable Farm", Sue Donaldson on "Well and Septic Maintenance", and Nikki Florio on "Green Families - Lifestyles, Habits, and Holidays" so far, and we're expecting others, so check back for the additions as we get them, and get you proposals in ASAP if you wish to present!
Sunshine Tent For Children
The Children's Sunshine Tent is one of the most popular features of the event, and Norah and Mistia will be again planning some great activities for the 2009 event! For more information contact Norah Gastelum at norahis@yahoo.com.
Become a Sponsor
The Roundup is an all volunteer, educational non-profit. We put this yearly event on for the community free of charge. Some of our expenses are covered by the Exhibitor and Food Vendor fees, but much of it comes from the money and services donated by sponsors who share our vision for a more secure and sustainable future. We couldn't do it without them!
If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please download the info and forms below or contact us with any questions. We'll recognize you in a noontime ceremony at the event on center stage, put you in the event program and on the posters, link to your website from this site, and add a short profile on your business to this space, among other things.
For more information, contact Vicki Bates at vrbates@charter.net or 775-265-6827 and download Sponsorship info and application (PDF file).
Our 2008 Sponsors were:
Independent Power Corp. (http://www.ipc-solar.com/) They design and install solar PV, solar hot water, and wind power systems and will also be leading a couple of the workshops.
Sunrise Sustainable Resources Group (http://www.sunrisenevada.org/) was instrumental in helping us get this event started last year, and is helping us again this year with a sponsorship. They're a non-profit whose mission is to empower Nevadans to use resources responsibly through education, advocacy, and community development, and are a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society and member of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada.
WalMart (www.walmartstores.com/sustainability) WalMart has invested in increasing the fuel efficiency of their truck fleet, using more natural light and energy efficient lighting and renewable energy sources in their stores, increasing recycling, reducing wasteful packaging, and expanding their green product lines in an effort to reach their eventual goal of 100% renewable energy and zero waste.
We're also grateful to Y B Messy (1-866-926-3779), McClain's Mobile Music (267-2100), and Sierra Pacific Power for donating their services for the 2nd year in a row. Y B Messy offers debris removal and box rentals and will again be handling our recycling and trash removal. McClain's Mobile Music offers music and DJ services for all occasions, and loaned one of their PA systems to use on stage. And Sierra Pacific Power again loaned us their solar trailer to power the PA system.
Thunderbird Ranch. They've had a keen interest in renewable energy and conservation for some time, and are looking into investing in wind power on the ranch.
Food And Entertainment
Enjoy a meal, wander the exhibitor booths, dance, or just relax to live music by local band Foothill Road and the Hitchhikers from 4-7pm!
We're looking for food vendors, especially those who serve organic or vegetarian fare, and will have a live band playing starting at 4pm, after the workshops are over. Click on the links to download Food Vendor and a Temporary Food Permit Application. (PDF files)

Who We Are
The Sustainable Living and Renewable Energy Roundup was started in late 2006 by a group of people who wanted to "promote sustainable practices, renewable energy, and environmental responsibility in the way we work, play, and live". Now 3 years later we are a volunteer-run, educational non-profit still working to inform and empower people in order to build a more sustainable community.
Mistia Zuckerman (mistia@thezuckermans.com) is this year's President, and with Norah Gastelum (norahis@yahoo.com) organizes the Family Activities (formerly known as Children's Tent) at the Green Living Festival.
Vicki Bates (vrbates@charter.net) is Secretary, makes the arrangements and recruits for the festival, and updates the website with the help of Jim Heck.
Katherine Winans (jkw@gbis.com) is Treasurer, keeps track of and communicates with the Exhibitors, food vendors, and sponsors, and does the booth assignments.
Barry Levan (barrylevan@yahoo.com) recruits for the event, arranges the entertainment, and does PR for the festival.
Steve Lewis (lewiss@unce.unr.edu) arranges the presentations and workshops.
Linda Kleiner (linda@comstockseed.com) helps with recruitment and PR.
Help with recruitment and PR would be welcome! If you'd like to volunteer, please contact any of the people listed above.
